Adama K. Dempster
is a prominent Liberian human rights and justice advocate with over 18 years of experience in transitional justice, policy advocacy, conflict prevention, and legal analysis. Currently a law student at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, he holds an MA in International Relations/Diplomacy and a BA in Sociology & Political Science.
Mr. Dempster serves as the National Secretary General and Co-founder of the Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy Platform of Liberia, where he coordinates multiple civil society networks working on human rights. He is also the Lead Campaigner and Co-founder of the Coalition for the Establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia, a national body uniting transitional justice experts, victim/survivor groups, and justice actors. Internationally, he acts as an International Ambassador for the Bring The Peace Movement (U.S.-based).
His previous roles include National Expert for the EU/ICTJ Facility on Justice in Conflict, Founding National Director of the Independent Human Rights Investigators (IHRI), and former Chief Human Rights Investigator for Liberia’s Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR). He has served as an Independent Expert for the vetting of INCHR commissioners, appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia.
Mr. Dempster is a 2024 International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) Fellow on Transitional Justice, a USIP Fellow (2012), an ICTJ Fellow (2009), and a University of Nottingham-trained Human Rights Expert (2007). He has received the 2023 Peace and Justice Award from California State University, Sacramento, and the 2022 National Human Rights Activist Award in Liberia.
He has presented at major international fora, including the UN Peacebuilding Commission (2024), the U.S. Congress Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission (2024), the Dublin Platform for HRDs at Risk (2024), the UN Human Rights Council (2018–2020), and the ECOWAS Commission (2019).
